vines and more
You are spoilt for choice; the area is famous for its wine. Vineyards nearest to the cottage are Pouilly Fume and Sancerre. Also nearby you will be able to sample the wines from Coteaux du Giennois, Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly, Chateaumeillant and of course Cotes de la Charite from La Charite. Those willing to travel further afield can pay a visit to Chablis.
The vineyards are open six days a week for sales and tasting. Maps of the Pouilly and Sancerre areas are supplied together with a note of our favourite vineyards to visit. We recommend a local company Vinitour-Centreloire for those who would like tutored tours of the wine areas and/or tastings.
The delicious goats cheese, Crottin de Chavignol, is produced locally and goes exceptionally well with the local wines.
Chateaux and Gardens: We are in the middle of the chateaux route "La Route Jacques-Coeur" which offers 16 chateaux and historical sites; this together with the abundance of beautiful gardens available locally means you will never lack something to do.
Canoeing: easily done, with local firms available to take you upstream so that you can canoe/drift downstream taking in the countryside, villages and bird life from the river, arriving back to where your car is waiting.
Cycling: the 'Loire a Velo' cycle path runs along the river and adjoining canal so you can enjoy off road cycling through the countryside. For people who enjoy a more challenging route, there is a good hill up to Sancerre.
Walking: along the Loire, through gently sloping vineyards or through the forests, the choice is yours. Whichever you choose, we supply maps and suggested routes.
Fishing: the locals are passionate fishermen, so why not join them? There is a huge choice of picturesque spots along the Loire. Day/weekly permits are obtainable in the village.
Golf: there is a 18 hole course at Golf du Sancerrois, Saint Thibault, (20 minutes by car).
Horse riding: is available at several centres locally. Details in 'Things to Do Guide' provided.
Local Towns: La Charite sur Loire, Sancerre, Vezelay, Bourges and Nevers are all beautiful towns well worth a visit.
Restaurants: offer wonderful local food and value, they will not disappoint.
Food shopping: we tend to do most of our shopping in La Charite. The town is a jewel with an Abbey, cafes, restaurants, good butchers and boulangeries and a market every Saturday morning.
